Volunteer Program

INTERN WITH THE ‘DEMCARES’ (DEMENTIA CARE AT SCARF) TEAM AT SCHIZOPHRENIA RESEARCH FOUNDATION (SCARF), TO WORK TOWARD SPREADING AWARENESS ABOUT DEMENTIA, ELIMINATING STIGMA AND CREATING A DEMENTIA-FRIENDLY SOCIETY.

This summer, we are offering internships to students who are interested in becoming familiar with person-centred care in geriatric mental health. We are looking for motivated and enthusiastic interns who can participate in a Volunteer Program.

During the course of this program, student volunteers will be matched with a family that is currently caring for a person with dementia. Volunteers will make regular visits to their home in order to spend some quality time with them, engage them in stimulating activities, conduct simple therapeutic interventions to improve their cognition and quality of life and form a bond of companionship with the patient as well as the family.

The aim of this project is as follows –

  1. To raise awareness about dementia among students
  2. To reduce stigma and discrimination towards individuals living with dementia and other geriatric mental health issues
  3. Establish relationships between the person with dementia, their family and the student
  4. Equip students with basic clinical skills, and train them on how to work with patients to deliver person-centred care
  5. To enable the development of dementia-friendly communities

REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be 18 or older
  • Must be interested in working with people
  • Must be willing to travel to the homes of the people they are paired with
  • Must have excellent communication skills
  • Must be creative and willing to plan interesting activities to engage the patients with
  • Must be patient, approachable and committed to the role

A written report is to be submitted at the end of 6 months on their experience as a volunteer and how they can contribute toward creating dementia-friendly societies.

Data Collection - Caregiver Burden (Research)
INTERN WITH THE ‘DEMCARES’ (DEMENTIA CARE AT SCARF) TEAM AT SCHIZOPHRENIA RESEARCH FOUNDATION (SCARF), TO GAIN FIRST-HAND RESEARCH EXPERIENCE AND MAKE A DIFFERENCE TO THE LIVES OF CAREGIVERS WITH PERSONS WITH DEMENTIA.

The DEMCARES project at SCARF is working hard to make a difference to the lives of caregivers of persons with dementia. The first step towards reducing caregiver burden is to measure it.We are currently in the process of developing a psychometric instrument to measure caregiver burden in India. In order to establish the psychometric properties of this tool, we will need to collect data from caregivers.

DEMCARES is offering students of psychology, social work and related discplines an opportunity to gain first-hand experience of participating in a large-scale research project. Students will –

  1. Be familiarized with the administration of a psychometric assessment tool to measure Caregiver Burden
  2. Collect data using the assessment tool from caregivers of persons with dementia
  3. Organize datasets for analysis

REQUIRED SKILLS:

  •  Must be interested in social sciences research
  •  Must have excellent communication skills
  •  Must be interested in working with people
  •  Must be committed and sincere
  •  Must have excellent organizational and planning skills

Media and Communications Internship

MEDIA AND COMMUNICATIONS INTERNSHIP

WHO ARE WE LOOKING FOR?

We are looking for an intern to be our in-house content creator and social media anchor! We would like you to put your penmanship skills towards creating some simple, yet effective information and communication material.

You will also manage our social media presence on Facebook, Google Plus and Instagram, so a strong working understanding on how these platforms work is a must.

Ideally, we would like someone who is, enthusiastic, willing to learn and will help us raise the profile of our work. We hope you are ready to get creative and push the boundaries a bit.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Create information and communication materials
  • Interact with different resource people to collect information towards creating social media posts
  • Cover and document events across the organization
  • Devise a media plan for the project
  • Managing and sharing content to our social media platforms
  • Updating and creating content for our website

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelors or Masters in Visual communication, Media studies, English literature or Mass media
  • Competent in MS Office
  • Competent in softwares such as CorelDRAW, Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop Requirements
  • Excellent communication skills in written English
  • Photography skills and ability to handle a camera
  • Someone who has a keen interest in raising awareness about mental health issues
  • Someone with a knack at identifying trending topics and applying it in a relevant manner to the work done by the organization
  • Applicants should be motivated and with plenty of initiative
  • Experience of content creation / blogging would be ideal
